Turmeric - The Anti-inflammatory supplement you need to get!

December 7, 2017

Turmeric is a spice commonly used in cooking, but did you know that this spice offers so much more than flavour?

Today there are thousands of studies that suggest Turmeric has a powerful effect on our health. Research focuses primarily on curcumin (the main component of turmeric) and how it has the ability to reduce the effects of chronic inflammation and joint pain such as arthritis, improves our bodies antioxidant capacity along with many other benefits.

Chronic Inflammation and Arthritis

Tumeric is a strong anti-inflammatory. It is so powerful that some studies suggest it matches the effectiveness of some anti-inflammatory drugs. Turmeric actually targets multiple steps in the inflammatory pathway, working to block molecules that switch on inflammatory genes in our body. The blocking of these molecules then limits the build up of inflammation and subsequently reduces the chronic nature of the inflammation. Inflammation is a complicated and difficult process to explain, so simply said, Turmeric is a bioactive substance that fights inflammation at the molecular level.

Antioxidant Capacity of the Body

Studies have shown that Turmeric is a potent antioxidant that can neutralize free radicals from affecting our body’s homeostasis. Neutralizing free radicals prevents oxidative damage to occur, a process that is believed to be a cause of increased ageing and many diseases. A natural supplement that could reduce the ageing effect on our body and assist in preventing disease is something everyone can benefit from.

Brain Function and Depression

Turmeric also works by increasing brain levels of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), a growth hormone that functions in the brain. Many common brain disorders have been linked to decreased levels of this hormone. This includes depression and Alzheimer’s disease. Turmeric taken to increase brain levels of BDNF, may be effective at delaying or even reversing many brain diseases and age-related decreases in brain function. There is also the possibility that it could help improve memory, although there is still more research to be done on this.
